

As you will know, over recent years the growth in the property sector has tremendously outstripped the number of individuals entering the industry, and subsequently we are now experiencing an unprecedented shortage of talent on the open market i.e. active job seekers.
The fact is; based on these shortages the best people now no longer need to become active job seekers to move their careers forward. In other words, the need for the best candidates to use traditional recruitment methods (Agencies, adverts etc) has become virtually non-existent, as they are now more highly valued, better rewarded, have more progression opportunities and hence are now better retained than ever by their current employers.
The best talent in the market will regularly receive calls from Agencies and Headhunters who have little understanding of the individual, trying to convince them to move jobs for more money. However, what these companies do not understand is that the key motivator of the best performers is never simply money in itself. As a result, when approached these individuals rarely “bite” and hence do not become regularly accessible to potential employers.
This is illustrated by the fact that the majority of the best people only move companies when directly approached by somebody they know and respect from another business. This is because the person approaching them is likely to understand what motivates that individual based on their existing relationship, and hence will have a genuine progression-based opportunity to offer.
This method of directly approaching (poaching) an individual who is known to be a top performer is increasingly common and works well for many employers. The obvious problem however is that the number of people that can actually be approached directly is clearly limited to the size of an Employers’ pool of contacts. This is nearly always a relatively small, finite number compared to the market as a whole.
